This past year was a very hectic one indeed. A lot of things happened in 2011. Many of these occurrences changed my outlook on life. Yet, there was one event in particular that I will never forget.

Truly unique and exceptional, our trip to Spain for The World Youth Day, or as many prefer to call it, Jornada Mundial de La Juventud, is an experience I will treasure forever. The memories I gained from it will forever be irreplaceable, and even more so are the lessons I acquired.

Here is a rather lengthy, but cherished account of the event:

August 14, 2011

I can hardly believe it. This is my first trip abroad without my family. As I was about to leave, my brother suddenly burst into tears. Crying, he clung to my mother who was now getting teary eyed as well. It took all that I had not to join them. Suddenly, my brother slipped two small packets of mentos in my hand. It was his little way of saying goodbye. A chorus of “I love you” and “I’ll miss you” ensued.

Our flight was at 12:20 am. I soon found that I was seated nowhere near anyone from my delegation, KALFI – DANIW. All around me were these people, all wearing the same polo shirt. Maybe they were going to ‘Jornada Mundial de la Juventud’ (JMJ) or World Youth Day (WYD) too.

Our next flight is at 7:50 in the morning. Good bye Dubai, Hello Spain!

We arrived in Madrid at around 3:00pm. We headed straight to our quarters—Colegio de Fomento in Las Tablas. We have had a lot of “firsts” today:

1. Our First Shower in Madrid: Gianna, Mica, JR, Ginelle, Issa and I were the very first to try out the shower. We had one problem though. The water turned out to be SCALDING hot. We even got burnt! Fortunately, we eventually found out how to make it work

2. Our First Spanish Mass in Madrid: Yay! Spanish mass! There were so many adorable Spanish children. Unfortunately, some of the only words I understood were entonces, ahora, escucha, the names of the Holy Family and Amen. It makes me laugh whenever I remember the experience. Oh well!

3. Our First McDonalds Meal in Madrid: MCDO! Oh joy! I was so incredibly thirsty – as was everyone else. I was chosen to order for my group. Unfortunately, in attempting to refer to the mcflurries, I accidentally said the Spanish equivalent of “two pick a toppings please.” How funny.

That day, we headed for Puerta del Sol. On the way there, Gianna got lost in Tribunal! Thank goodness we were able contact her and meet up with her eventually.

Together, we met hundreds of new friends from every nation! We even met a group of Israelites! Among them was a Filipina.little group.

Afterwards, at 8pm, we attended the first opening World Youth Day Mass! There, it was incredibly hot. There were a huge number of people there. In effect, it was extremely crowded.

After the Mass, we looked for a place to eat, and was able to find one near our lodging. At 12 midnight, we were so happy to break the long fast and have our fill.

Weary and exhausted, we arrived home at two in the morning, and I still had to take a shower! Three hours of sleep started to become a normal thing for me.

August 17 2011

Today, we met with the prelate of Opus Dei! His name is Bishop Javier Echeverria. We all gathered in Vista Allegre for this meeting. Unfortunately, I cannot relate much of what happened in this journal because he spoke in Spanish and during the meeting, most of the members of our delegation, including yours truly, had no radio for translation.

After the meeting, we descended the stairs and lo and behold! Guess who we saw! It was our other friends from school! We saw the Cebu Delegation! (This included Mariel Tanchuling!) We also saw the Tanglaw Delegation! (Including Nikka, Andie, Anna, Sea, and many more of our friends!) It was so nice to see them! Squeals and hugs were exchanged.

Afterwards, we had choir practice! You see, our delegation was supposed to join the international choir! We all met up in a big church to vocalize and learn the songs. There were so many nationalities present!

Then, it was dinner time! We had Paella for dinner. Rice! How I missed thee! Eating outside the restaurant, we had so much fun.

When we got home, it was time for Cultural Night! The nationalities in the school where we stay each presented a cultural dance from their native land. There were people from Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and more.

August 18, 2011

Early in the morning, we had mass and meditation with the Hong Kong people. At the side, we sang, acting as the choir for the mass. Oh my goodness! How embarrassing! Since I just awoke recently, my voice was still very bad, as it is every morning. I think I was rather out of tune. Oops! Sorry!

Afterwards, we decided to look for a good spot. You see, the pope was arriving today! We wanted to greet him as he came from the airport.

Outside the Republica de Argentina, we met some Spanish girls who told us where to go. Then, we met a sweet old Filipino couple who led us to the right street.

WE SAW THE POPE! Even before he came, chants echoed all across the street:

MABUHAY ANG SANTO PAPA!

SI, SI, SI! EL PAPA ESTA AQUI!

VIVA EL PAPA!

As the Pope finally arrived, some of us cried. Even I got teary eyed. We saw the pope! I can hardly believe it! Unfortunately, the papa mobil, their name for the Pope’s car, drove by rather quickly, or at least faster than we would have liked. It all happened so fast.

Then we ate lunch. YUM. Afterwards, we waited for the Pope once more in Plaza de Cibeles. This time, it was an official World Youth Day activity. We met so many people! Hooray! We saw the pope, AGAIN! This time, the Papa mobil was much slower! We got a very good view of him! My friend even got a video! This time, I really did cry. In fact, I think just about everyone in our delegation cried. Well fine, perhaps not everyone. However, I can say that a lot of us did cry very hard. People were simply looking at us and smiling. We were the only ones crying!

Today, we were accompanied by some Spanish volunteers! Together, we all followed the footsteps of Saint Josemaria Escriva in Madrid. One volunteer was Merce. Her name is derived from her real name, Mercedes. The other was Ysa. I spoke to her in Spanish . She was so nice to me! At one point, I started talking to her in English, along with my other friends. However she told me: “You have to talk to me in Spanish because you can speak Spanish well.”

After lunch, we had another World Youth Day activity! It was the Way of the Cross. Right in front of us was the fifth station: Jesus Carries His Cross.

We left Las Tablas at around 11am and travelled to Cuatro Vientos, the place where the vigil would be held. Our spot was in C3 which was very near the Pope. This is where we would stay for the night. Once there, we dumped our sleeping bags on the ground and tried to get under some shade. It was extremely hot. I could hardly TAKE the heat. Everyone was dying for water or coke, or any sort of refreshment. There were hundreds upon hundreds of people! It was very cramped in Cuatro Vientos. Everywhere you went, everywhere you looked, as far as the eye could see, you would find more and more people. We were like sardines in a jar. Except, the jar was open and inside a giant oven.

Then, the vigil started. All of a sudden, it started raining! We were all trying to get under covers of any sort. Everyone put out their umbrellas and were using malongs/sarongs/shawls for their backs. We were all sharing them. I was sharing with Say. The speaker then said, “Let us count our prayers and see if it stops raining.” Miracle of Miracles, the rain stopped! It literally just stopped! It was amazing! Everyone started cheering, ‘ESTA ES LA JUVENTUD DEL PAPA! It really is astonishing what the power of prayer can do.

Pope Benedict XVI was thanking us all for our continued support and sacrifices. He then started to explain how the rain was a sign that the Lord was showering his blessings upon us. I believe he was right. In fact, I’m sure we all must have prayed for water earlier.

Mia and I shared my wet sleeping bag. There were grasshoppers and black ants everywhere! Not only that, but irritating spiky things were also hurting us. I must say, it was freezing. Mia and I fell asleep talking. At one point in the

middle of the night, or rather, very early in the morning (since we slept way past midnight), when it got TOO cold, Mia and I awoke at the same time, buried ourselves deeper in the sleeping bag

We awoke at seven in the morning. The whole Daniw Delegation changed into their Philippine shirts. Then ensued the Closing World Youth Day/Jornada Mundial de la Juventud Mass. I received the Holy Eucharist! It was probably blessed by the Pope! Hooray! During the mass the Pope blessed us and our things (our rosaries, scapulars, etc.) Double Hooray!

Then came the announcement. The next World Youth Day would be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! A loud cheer erupted from the crowds.

Finally, we left Cuatro Vientos. World Youth Day/ Jornada Mundial de la Juventud was over! I couldn’t believe it. Everyone was so sad and so reluctant for it to end.

We then rode the metro home for the very last time. I’m going to miss riding the metro so much! I shall miss all the singing, the jumping, the people, the jokes, the tokens. You see, usually, in the metro, we would be in the middle of different nationalities, who were singing and chanting in loud voices their own native songs and chants, contesting with other nationalities. It was always so fun.

We went to Zaragosa. There, we entered the Church ‘La Senora del Pilar’ (Our Lady of the Pilar). It was where our Lady appeared to Saint James and offered her maternal affection for his apostolic work. We attended Spanish Mass there and afterwards, kissed the pillar.

Across from the church, there were some stores. There, I brought a bracelet with the image of La Senora del Pilar and The Crucifixion. We then ate lunch. I shared a pizza with Mo. However, we were both full after one slice each.

We rode the bus to Barbastro! We went to the house where Saint Josemaria Escriva was born and lived for thirteen years. It was called Centro Cultural Entrearcos. St. Josemaria did not want it to be a museum but a place that would serve other people, so it eventually became a centre. The only remaining part of the house was the column outside. We then went to the oratory and kissed the relic of Saint Josemaria. We also saw his grandparent’s house, his school and the cathedral where he was baptized.

August 23, 2011

Hooray! We had churos and chocolate for breakfast! Our whole delegation has been asking for it since we got to Spain. Finally!

We left at nine in the morning. Afterwards, we arrived in Torreciudad! There, we met up with the Tanglaw delegation.

As soon as we got to the church, we made a visit to our Lord. During the visit, a priest came up to us. He told us he had something to say. This is what he said:

“Since you have gone to World Youth Day/Jornada Mundial de la Juventud, you need to take something out of it. The only resolution you can have is to be a saint. Now, a saint is not perfect, is not sinless, but is someone who is in love with God.”

Later, we travelled to Lourdes and upon our arrival, stayed in a hotel called La Solitude. We joined the rosary procession in Lourdes at 8pm.

August 24 2011

I quickly took a shower and rushed down alongside Mica. We ate downstairs.

We then had mass in English! Yay! It was so wonderful to be able to actually understand it!

We had to leave soon, otherwise we would miss the train to Paris. Unfortunately, that meant we couldn’t bathe in the holy water, which we really wanted to do. Some of the people in our delegation, including Jay, started silently praying.

All of a sudden, a man who was one of those in charge of the bathing approached us. He started speaking to Ms. Aguiling. He told us to wait a moment. When he returned, they allowed us in! We were given special passage! They actually let us skip the whole line and let us into the baths! It brings tears to my eyes just recalling it. It was a miracle! We really were so lucky!

While waiting for my turn, I was starting to cry a little. I could not believe this was happening to me. First, I made the sign of the cross and prayed one Our Father, One Hail Mary, and if memory serves, one Glory Be. Then, my turn. They ask you to sit in the tub, with only your sheet on. The ladies hold both your arms and make you move across the water one way, then the other. All the while, you’re simply seated. The water itself was freezing cold. It was so amazing. It was a great experience. You could really feel the serenity of the place. It really did seem like there was a holy presence there. Only my lower legs, below the knees remained wet. Each and every one of us was happy that we were able to have such a wonderful opportunity.

We then had to catch the train to Paris. I have no idea how long the train ride took. But, it was a fun train ride!

Finally, we arrived in Paris in the evening and saw the Eiffel Tower all lit up! Amazing!

August 25 2011

We went downstairs to eat breakfast. Then we left. The first place we went to was the Notre Dame! It was amazing. Made in Gothic style, it seemed very dark, but it was very beautiful. We saw the Notre Dame, or in other words, our Lady of Notre Dame.

Then, we went to The Louvre! I stayed with Mia and Ms. Dess. We saw Spanish, Italian and French paintings! I also caught a glimpse of the Mona Lisa and the statue of Nike, the goddess of victory. Afterwards, we ate near the Eiffel Tower! We had a very clear view of it. Here, we started to take many pictures. Then, we walked to the actual Eiffel Tower! It was huge! I cannot believe they were able to make this all those years ago. Human beings are such geniuses!

While the others shop, I, with some in my group, travelled to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. While waiting outside the shop, a French nun began to explain the medals to us.

We all travelled back to the hotel and met the other group there. Afterwards, we all brought our bags to the bus which brought us to the French Airport!

We then had two flights: One from Paris to Dubai, and another from Dubai to the Philippines.

We are finally back in the Philippines! I missed it here so much! I missed the food, and my family and my friends! World Youth Day was an amazing experience which I will always treasure. It has given me wonderful memories and the opportunity to bond with my old friends and make new ones as well! However, it really is nice to be back. I may travel all over the world, but in the end, there’s no place like home.

JMJ Memento

During the JMJ, there were countless chants that we all recited as one. However, there was one saying in particular that attracted me. Now, to welcome the New Year, this ‘proverb’ will be my guide.

Millions of youth from every nation, united, proclaimed this chant with gusto and pride. Even now, our fervent cry still rings just as loudly in my ears.

“Esta es la juventud del Papa.”

“DIVORCE: PANAHON NA BA?”

Has the affirmation “...for richer, for poorer in sickness and in health, until death do us part.” converted itself to a sheer dwindling inquiry? Has our marriage vows, carefully woven by the Church, dutifully followed by married people, been shaken?

Snippets of news and ideas on divorce have been mooning over the country’s headlines, aside from the controversial RH Bill. The critical question is, is our country ready to “progress” towards what we so-called a pragmatic approach such as divorce?

Last August 18, 2011 in Palma Hall rm 400, a forum on divorce was held with speakers, Atty. Toto Villareal, and a married couple, Evangelina and Tiburcio Evalle.

As expected from a legal counsel, and a UP law professor that he is, Atty. Toto Villareal proved himself to be straightforward while maintaining the relaxed atmosphere in the forum. The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Evalle, on the other hand, exhibited a very open and casual discussion with regard to the issue. Being married for thirty years, and having four children, they seek to share to people their views and goals for a better Filipino community through forming the basic unit of the society: family. As a married couple, they organize youth congresses, hold seminars on values formation, and conduct parenting courses, since they have a high regard on family envisioning.

The first question raised in the forum was, “What is marriage?” (Ano ang kasal?)

From Atty. Villareal, and some audience participation, they have come upon the ideas that marriage is 1) composed of two, NOT three parties, 2) a promise, 3) “BUKLOD”

4) an element of God. After presenting the platter of opinions, comes Atty. Toto’s law statements based on the Family Code of the Philippines, that marriage is a 1) special contract 2) between a man and woman 3) of permanent union 4) entered into/in accordance with law, and 4) has a purpose: for the establishment of conjugal and family life. Atty. also mentioned the property relation of married individuals, which is subject to limitations. Evangie Evalle meanwhile, sees marriage as a complex union due to the uprise of differences between the wife and the husband. She, however, furthered enlightened listeners due to her story-telling, and her statement that, differences and communication conflicts are a part of a married life. Tiburcio, on the other hand, specified on the man’s role towards his wife. That in a marriage, there should be teamwork — a give and take process.

Another crucial question was in relation to the problems arising among married couples. Mrs. Evalle enumerated some causes of conflicts such as verbal abuse, vice, mother-in-laws, and physically separated families (OFWs, etc.) She believes that divorce has a very enormous effect on a child’s emotional and psychological welfare. Her husband believes likewise as well, pinpointing that the important relationship in the family is the relationship of the mother and father, since everything will fall into place when the wife and the husband is in very good terms. Atty. Villareal, on the other side, made way to the technical aspects of legal separation and divorce, while preserving his side of negation to divorce. He mentioned of antecedence, gravity and incurability with regard to filing of documents for nullity of marriage. He also cited a somehow, scientific reason why dilemmas transpire in marriage: the Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

To sum up the discussion, the speakers emphasized that divorce is not an answer to the wide and multiplying number of family problems. A woman divorcing a man due to his aggressive behavior would not end the problem of broken families, and would fail to ensure that children grow up in good hands. For a ruined family to be fixed, one need not close down a house and start building another one, abandoning what was put up before. What it needs is time, mending, and initiative for the damage to be repaired.

On December 7, Benedict XVI lit the world's largest Christmas tree, and expressed "three wishes" for this Christmas.

"Before lighting the tree," he said, "I would like to express three wishes. This Christmas tree is formed on the slopes of Mt. Ingino at whose summit is found the basilica of Gubbio's patron saint, St. Ubaldo. When we look at it our eyes are lifted up, raised toward the sky, toward the world of God."

On "The Spiritual" Me.

I almost forgot to blog about something important that I've recently been up to. It's the part of my life called "Developing Jerika's Spirituality". This won't be too long.

It all started last semester around July, when I received a text message from a woman. Apparently, I've been assigned to her as her mentee, and her as my mentor. Of course I was shocked, because I really don't know how this whole mentoring goes and how I got involved in it. And then I remembered, that prior to that text message, I received an email from a so-called "Daniw Study Center", saying stuff about their institution ( I really can't remember exactly what I read. Usually I delete these kind of emails immediately). I wondered how they got my email, then I remembered that it must have been one of those sign-up sheets that people pass around during the freshman orientation program that I just write on without minding what I write and what I'm signing up for. Usually this spells disaster, but fortunately in my case, it's a blessing in disguise.

So I met up and talked to this woman, and found out that her name was Marie Mangona. I was honestly expecting someone in the middle 20's when we were talking on the phone. She sounded so young, vibrant, and happy. When I came to our meeting place, I saw a woman who was older than I thought- and she was alone in that place. I didn't think of her as my mentor at first (because she looked way older than me) and I was hesitant to approach her, but the doubts I had went away when she flashed this super welcoming smile at me. I sat beside her, and we started with the basics like my family and educational background. She explained to me what this mentoring was and she told me that she was also a graduate of BS Chemistry. She was narrating how UP was like during her time, and stuff like that. She also told me that she wanted to know more about me- my study habits, my family relationships, and how my first day in UP went. I liked her.

Our chats and meet-ups became more frequent, it's almost like a weekly routine for me. I like talking to her and it's something I look forward to whenever it's a "meet-up" day. I would talk to her about my grades, my org, my block mates and professors, my family, my friends, my plans in life. In return, she would talk to me about the deeper things that would be too long to enumerate in this blog post. My point is, I learn a lot from her - things that aren't found in books.

Soon enough, she told me about this study center that's also in Katipunan, near my house, and was inviting me to pay a visit during my free time. I said yes, and found out that this study center is called Daniw (google it if you want). Daniw is a venue for educational, socio-cultural, and spiritual activities that complement the academic training received by high school and college female students. Later I found out that apparently, Daniw is one of the projects of the Kalinangan Youth Foundation that caters to high school girls, university students, and young professional women. When I saw the place, it actually looked like a house more than an institution to me. It has a chapel, a living room, and a mini library. The minute I stepped into that house, I felt so peaceful and happy. Plus, all the people there are so welcoming and warm, I can't help but smile the whole time I was there.

I got acquainted with the people there and met so many new friends- most of them are freshmen from UP Diliman too. In time, I got involved in Daniw's house activities like the film showings, open forums, tutorials, the book club, and my personal favorite, the cooking classes. But what I like most about being in Daniw is that I constantly learn something new from the people there. I sure have learned a lot, from a secret cheesecake recipe to the true meaning of happiness. Whenever I'm there, it's like I am slowly becoming a better person by the day. Isn't that what we all want to happen? To be a better person than we were yesterday? Through Daniw, I feel like I can achieve that. Even just through the slightest and seemingly insignificant changes in me, I feel like I can achieve that.

I remember back then, whenever I pray I always ask God to help me find what will make me more real. I ask for something that will make me a better person, and something that will make my existence worthy. I ask Him to give me something that will make me eternally happy, content, and peaceful.

Something tells me that this is it.

Stand Out For the Right Reasons!

Admit it or not, it is natural for us girls to want to look good, not only for ourselves, but as well as for others. There are a number of ways to pull this off, but the most explicit would be through what we wear. Before considering buying any top or article of clothing, we have that natural tendency to try it on and scrutinize ourselves in the mirror. “Does it complement my skin? Is it flattering to my figure?” There’s that instinct to look good in what we wear. Clothes have evolved from initially being a necessity for protection to an asset to one’s appearance. Regardless of the function, it’s for beauty that fashion sells.
The question is at what price will you get it? There comes the need for us to be wise consumers of fashion, in terms of money and most importantly, our modesty. At some point, we need to draw the line because the truth is that what we wear can send the wrong message, especially to the opposite sex.
I attended a whole-day fashion get-together last October 22, 2011 entitled “Stand Out”. The get-together was not your typical fashion workshop that shared the latest trends and offered practical tips on how to dress up. It went beyond achieving the look, and looked into the person. It redefined fashion and beauty through addressing the real worth of a person, rather than the worth of one’s body. The seminar was organized by the group “Women Influencing Fashion”, who believe that women can ‘stand-out’, looking stylish and attractive while not having to reveal skin. This pretty much counteracts the fashion culture nowadays, that in order to look attractive and ‘stand out’, you need to reveal some skin or showcase your body. Nowadays, I scan magazines, watch TV or just look around campus and see girls and women in tank tops, tubes, shorts, mini skirts and low necklines. Regardless of the reason, there is that pressure to show off our body or some skin in what we wear. And regardless of how practical our reasons may be, we cannot escape the attention and the consequences that come with it. So many girls wear revealing outfits, thinking that they are just wearing what’s ‘in’, comfortable or appropriate, without knowing that they run the risk of being objectified or disrespected by men. They may get the attention, but at what cost? The danger with simply following the fashions or giving in to the pressure is losing respect for one’s body and dignity.
It was a wake-up call for me to be in that seminar. It convinced me of what was truly essential. Like most girls, I never really bothered with showing skin as long as I looked stylish and felt comfortable. What I failed to do in front of the mirror was to ask myself, “What message do I send to guys? What does this say about my person?” These are pretty serious questions, but nonetheless questions that matter to one’s person and dignity. Each one of us possesses a human dignity given freely by God who made us out of His own image and likeness. It is our responsibility to uphold this with how we present and carry ourselves. We aren’t merely bodies, we have souls. Revealing too much skin or accentuating our bodies can give the impression to men that we are just worth our bodies. We only sell ourselves short and do injustice to our human dignity. We should not lose essence of who we are inside, for that’s what truly matters and attracts someone in the long run. According to Mike Matthews in his article, Sexy Fashions…What do Men think, “What makes women even more attractive than their physical beauty and the fashionable clothes they wear is their modesty. It’s a virtue that makes them glow in a beautiful way. It shows thoughtfulness, inner strength and high self-esteem. Modesty also shows a pure heart and the generous desire to save oneself for a future spouse”.
To drive Stand Out’s point, we don’t need to show off our legs, cleavage or bare our bodies to be fashionable and worthy of others’ attention. Experiment with fabrics and stylish prints that complement your physique and protect your body’s intimacy. It also adds to carry yourselves with confidence and grace. In this way, you demand respect and exude a deeper beauty, one that makes guys appreciate you not for your body, but for your person.
Don’t be afraid to clash with the environment, to drive a worthy and noble point. What you wear sends your message. Choose to stand out for the right reasons.

In the morning of February 24, 2011, the much sought after American speaker Jason Evert wowed around 1800 people at the University Theater of the University of the Philippines-Diliman with statistics, a blonde wig, and a powerful message: CHASTITY.

This event entitled Love, Life and Everything in Between was co-organized by UP KLUBTALA, a student outreach group based in Daniw and UP Diliman, together with the Student Executive Board of the University of Asia and the Pacific. The whole affair consisted of two parts- a talk about Romance Without Regrets by Jason Evert and I rock for Love my Role for Life, a moderated discussion with Jason Evert, Miguel Escueta, Abby Asistio, Llamar Brothers, Aine Bianco and Audrey Zubiri and a series of performances of some of the mentioned artists.

People nowadays think of chastity as a farfetched concept, only to be practiced by priests and nuns. Some do not even know what it means or think that it is not the “in” thing anymore. But after Mr. Evert’s talk about Romance Without Regrets, many students and professors from different schools and universities and people outside the academic world went home with the truth about having pure relationships without leaving the author of love Himself out of the picture.

A talented speaker, theologian and husband, Mr. Evert is the perfect person who could talk about the importance and effects of practicing chastity to the person, the family and the society. With various statistics, he talked about how promiscuity, pornography and use of contraceptives expose people to the dangers of STDs and unwanted pregnancies, and rob them of their dignity and the chance of having true and faithful relationships.

Jason Evert shared numerous stories about chastity but what he wanted his audience to remember was that it is not a list of do’s and don’ts but a matter of really thinking about the good of the other person. During his talk, he asked a big guy from the audience to come up the stage, wear a blonde wig and be his “girlfriend”. He carried the volunteer on his back and gradually went near the edge of the stage until the guy asked him to stop because he got scared of falling off. This is one of the most striking analogies he gave on relationships between guys and girls and in answering the question “how far is too far?” He explained that if we truly love our partners we won’t even dare subject them to a situation where he or she is at the brink of danger. And in relationships, he added that it is easy “to respect a girl who has got that much self respect herself”.

After giving facts and stories about relationships and human sexuality, the audience might have felt heavy and discouraged because totally giving oneself to another person is demanding especially when someone is already stuck in a difficult situation. But to answer this problem, Jason Evert shared a beautiful story of a girl who in her childhood did not experience love from her father and because of this lack of love and affection she went on a cycle of horrendous empty relationships wherein she was just used and abused. He continued on sharing how this girl was able to get out of it by listening to a similar talk he is currently giving and through this talk she was able to realize what she had lost. She decided to change her life and win back the dignity she deserves.

Why did Jason Evert know a lot about this girl? Why did he take the pains of telling this story? It’s because this girl is the same girl he married seven years ago, whom he is raising three wonderful children with.

Finally he ended his talk by a reminder that no matter what we have done in the past or how heavy we felt about it, what counts is how God looks at us with what we have done and that He loves us and will do whatever it takes to save us from the mess we caused. All we need to do is to trust Him.

I started to become a volunteer of U.P. Klub Tala about a year ago. I started out during Summer Camp 2010. We guide the kids during their seminars held every Saturdays of the month of May. There were teachers/speakers who were experts on a specific field like art, dancing, singing, cooking, health and family to name a few, already assigned to teach for each Saturday. Most importantly, we teach the little children catechism so that at a young age, they would already know more about God and this will help to make their values intact.

Not only do we do volunteer works during summer but also we do these even during school days. Every Monday, we teach the kids at Batino Elementary School subjects like Mathematics and English. This schedule is very applicable for us, U.P. students, for the reason that most of us don’t have Monday classes. We also teach catechism to the kids at Park 7, Loyola Heights every Saturday.

As you can see, we do these the whole year round. It’s like a drug, a good one, which is so addictive. It’s like vitamins that will nourish all aspects of your personality (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, etc.). The moment I started to share whatever I have to the kids, I felt like I’m a big help to the society. I felt like I did something great in my own simple way. I felt the sense of achievement within me that I thought I will be feeling many years from now because, as of now, I am just a student, dependent on my parents and limited by a lot of factors. I thought I can’t do something spectacular because I am just an ordinary student. All I have to do is to study, get high grades, make my parents proud, go to parties, shop and do the rest of the activities that people of my age do. But I want to try to do something new, something that is worthy of my time and effort, something that will have a long-lasting effect, not only on my part but also on the part of the beneficiary of my action. That’s why I chose to volunteer.

A person dear to me asked me this question, “Why do you do volunteer works eh you don’t get paid for it?” And I just said, “I’m happy with what I’m doing. I’m happy.” I just can’t expound my answer. Honestly, I can’t explain the feeling of helping others and get paid by calling you “ate” or “teacher” or get paid by their genuine smiles. For me, these are enough payments for a simple task that I did. For the first time, I felt the contentment that I’m searching for. Knowing me as a stingy person, my relatives, especially my siblings, would be shock by this reaction of mine.

Being a volunteer taught me a lot of things. It taught me to be more responsible especially when it comes to arranging my schedules so that I can maximize my time. It taught me to set good examples not only to the kids that I teach but also to my comrades. It taught me to find myself because according to Mahatma Gandhi, “The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Therefore, I conclude, being a volunteer is a win-win situation after all. You share whatever you can to others, you gain something in return.

A friend once said, “I dress for respect.” At first I said to myself, “Don’t we all do?” then I remembered seeing some friends and schoolmates wearing short skirts or short shorts partnered with cropped tops, tubes, or spaghetti straps. They even have the guts to go out of their homes wearing those so-called “fashionable” clothes and walk down the streets of Katipunan. One afternoon, while my friend and I were walking along the sidewalk of Marcos Highway, a man sitting on the passenger seat of a big truck yelled out to my friend-- who was wearing a one-piece outfit which was short shorts plus a spaghetti strap top -- “Sexy!” She felt insulted and replied with “BASTOS!” losing her poise. She kept ranting to me how men these days look at women so maliciously and often times disrespect them in public. I was actually confused having heard that from her, so I simply asked what was pretty obvious “Ba’t ka kasi nag-susuot ng ganyan?” My question ended her ranting and our conversation altogether. I wonder where they got this idea of equating beauty and fashionable to exposing more skin. Then it hit me, media is responsible for popularizing this fashion. Media, according to dictionary.com, “is the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers and magazines, that reach or influence people widely.” Because media is widely accessible, people, especially teenagers, developed the idea that meadia shows everything. People start impersonating show business personalities, who in majority’s belief, sets standards for everybody else in this world. Before, the basis of Filipino women’s fashion was Maria Clara, who wore the Filipiñana. Then it became more comfortable-jeans and shirts. In our generation it has become way too comfortable, evolving to very short shorts and sleeveless tops, revealing more skins for other people’s pleasure. If not for the satisfaction of the people around them, what other reasons could there be? Nowadays, when people hear the term “conservative”, most people automatically think of the “manang look” where every part of body is covered up similar to our grandparent’s fashion, hence the term. But being conservative does not necessarily mean having an adult or off-my-age look. As I have learned from another friend, “a person can be fashionable and conservative without looking like a manang.” How? You don’t have to wear clothes that would expose too much skin; all you need to do is mix an match your descent clothes with its colors and styles that would suit the occasion. You can even use your mom’s clothes or bags to have a vintage style, but just be sure that the vintage look that you are trying to get would be somewhat appealing for your age.

“Oh, bakit umuwi si Kris?”

The famous line my family dares to utter as they snicker behind my back while watching me trudge through the now oh-so-unfamiliar living room of our house. I retaliate by simply rolling my eyes and drowning them...with a month and a half worth of hugs and affection, of course!

Daniw has been more than a home for me. (Hence, I was only able to go home once a month!)

One remarkable feature in Daniw is the presence of good pressure. I had and still am at awe with the people in Daniw. They are intelligent, kind, witty and playful. No joke with the notion of being a “role model”. Being surrounded by these people, who are both achievers and leaders as well, makes me want to push myself to the limit. This good pressure gives me the urge to be better- to excel.

But excel in what?

The first thing that came to my mind was to excel in academics. Daniw agrees with this but opens the curtain to other aspects such as and not limited to, growth in social skills and human virtues, increase in socio-civic awareness and growth in piety. A lot of people visit Daniw for various reasons, and through this, I was exposed to them and this had helped me to be more social and aware of my surroundings. Daniw also organizes different projects in which I tried to participate in to improve leadership skills. Daniw has helped me (and still is) to grow as a holistic person. These attributes would definitely help and prepare me for the future (but let’s not forget the present or current) arrangements.

But why do this?

Daniw knows that there is a deeper reason than achieving high grades (bragging rights?!). We do these things for a greater purpose- for God. Our generation is so preoccupied with different things that we tend to forget God. And I can definitely say that I am grateful to Daniw for making me realize this!

Chilling Out!

Community service seemed like a hard task at first glance; throw in a few friends who know how to have a crazy time, a bunch of energetic Caridad Ibaba Elementary School kids eager to learn, a mountain to climb and waterfalls to swim, and a stall next to your sleeping quarters which sells scrumptious halo-halo and it wouldn’t sound like such a heavy chore at all!

April 12 to 16, 2011 was my first experience of out-of-town community service. We were five teenaged students and two moderators ready to get lost in five-hours-away Atimonan, Quezon. We weren’t exactly ready for the week, with only vague ideas on what to do as community work – teaching grade school students and painting the school playground. We had not set a specific schedule so we weren’t anticipating much yet from the activity itself. All we knew was we were there to help our fellow students, not thinking that fun was part of the equation as well.

We left our bags at the Rural Bank of Atimonan where we were to stay for the week, and walked around the quaint town in the hope of finding the street which will lead us to the beach. It was a windy day and the waves were crashing onto the sand so we did not even dare and try to soak our feet on the shore. We walked until one of us got worried that our chaperone would be looking for us so we went back.

The following days were jam-packed with activities that there was no idle time at all. We split our group into two: two of us taught Math in the morning while the remaining three painted the school playground; in the afternoon, the three taught English while the other two painted the playground. The grade school students were very excited to see us and were eager to learn and review for their National Achievement Test this coming school year. The children were grateful for the giveaway bags and toys from Nestea and Shell, respectively. We had a blast painting the playground with an “under the sea” theme. We also had an adventure during our one-day break from teaching. We hiked up a mountain to see for ourselves the wonderful Bantakay Falls. We braved the ice-cold water just to cool ourselves from the warmth of that sunny day.

We definitely would want to go back to Atimonan and do community work again, just as the schoolchildren wished us to return next year!

"University students from different disciplines gathered together in Daniw one Saturday afternoon for a roundtable discussion with experts from different fields. The guests were Prof. Rachel Khan from the Journalism department in UP College of Mass Communication, Dr. Aliza Racelis from UP College of Business Administration, and Dr. Liza Manalo, an expert on Palliative Care. The central theme of the discussion was on "Living Freedom Decisively". The topics discussed ranged from abortion and euthanasia to business ethics and the media. Students and professors shared their ideas and opinions on all of these topics. It was, truly, an enriching intellectual experience for all those who were present."

The keynote speaker is Ms. Vanessa R. Valdez, the Creative Manager of ABS-CBN and multi-awarded screenplay writer (One More Chance, A Love Story, I Love You, Goodbye).

UNIV is an annual research project conducted by the Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (ICU), an Italian NGO, since 1968. It provides a continuing forum that challenges university students to positively confront current issues through research and social projects.The main project of UNIV participants is to form workgroups and undertake a study related to the current theme. This year’s theme is Living Freedom Decisively. The theme encourages brief but substantial student papers on the role of the university in society.

Every February, an UNIV National Congress is held where accepted papers by workgroups are presented to students, educators, and other guests from top universities and colleges in the country. The culminating activity is an International Congress held in Rome, Italy where students from over 85 countries are given the opportunity to present their research papers. The Congress is also a venue for the development of university relations on a cultural level. Participants to UNIV are students of different races, religion and cultural background who share a common interest in the university, in the spirit of openness, dialogue and service that characterizes it.

Dedicate your time in a rural community to help out in giving catechism classes for children, free mental and dental services and painting a school or chapel. Business Unusual is a seminar for students on social entrepreneurship, a phenomenon that is changing the face of business. Now, ventures can be primarily directed toward change and development, being of service to community and the nation while still having the basic characteristic of businesses which is to gain profit.

The Daniw-UNIV LPP is one of the most important events in the annual research paper project. Panelists and advisers are invited to comment on the working undergraduate researches by UNIV participants to prepare them for the national-level Final Paper Presentation. We wish all the best to the nine groups from the University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University who will be presenting their ideas about issues on this year's theme: UNIVERSITY: KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT LIMITS.

Every year, thousands of students and professors gather in Rome for the international congress providing a marketplace of ideas for intellectual and cultural exchange.
